Słynny francuski reżyser (1925-2003). Po ukończeniu akademii sztuk pięknych pracował jako malarz. Nie odnosił w tej dziedzinie sukcesów, więc postanowił spróbować sił w przemyśle filmowym. Pod koniec lat 50. nakręcił pierwsze produkcje krótkometrażowe, a w pełnym metrażu zadebiutował realistycznym Nagim dzieciństwem, wyróżnionym Nagrodą im. Jeana Vigo. Największe mistrzostwo osiągnął w latach 80., realizując takie filmy jak nagrodzone Złotą Palmą Pod słońcem szatana czy biograficzny Van Gogh.

(1925 - 2003) After studying fine arts, this famous French director first worked as a painter. Having had no success, however, he decided to try his hand at filmmaking. He made his first short films at the end of the 1950s, while his feature-film debut was the realistic Naked Childhood, for which he was awarded the Prix Jean Vigo. His true masterpieces came in the 1980s and include Under the Sun of Satan, which won the Palme d’Or at Cannes, and the biopic Van Gogh.
