W tej epizodycznej opowieści wątkiem głównym są perypetie Pávki ze sprawiającym coraz większe kłopoty Otíkiem, którego interesują tylko gołębie i kino. Nieudana próba przeniesienia chłopaka do Pragi prowadzi do oczywistej konstatacji: społeczność bez gapowatego Otíka wiele traci, więc Pávek sprowadza go z powrotem. Wsi moja sielska, anielska, pochwała wspólnoty i codziennych ludzkich więzi, to trzecia i przedostatnia współpraca tandemu Jiří Menzel (reżyseria) i Zdeněk Svěrák (scenariusz). Film powstał niejako przez pomyłkę (o czym więcej przed seansem), a okazał się jednym z najlepszych w dorobku Menzla i oprócz garści innych nagród zdobył kolejną dla Czechów nominację do Oscara w kategorii najlepszy film nieanglojęzyczny. Po obejrzeniu filmu staje się jasne, dlaczego w Czechach i w Słowacji spotkać można lokale pod szyldem „Na Siódmym Schodzie”.

In the village of Křečovice, we meet truck driver Karel Pávek (Marián Labuda) and his mentally challenged assistant Otík Rákosník (János Bán), the world-weary admirer of life’s beauty Dr. Skružný (Rudolf Hrušínský), painter Ryba (Zdeněk Svěrák), and many other colorful characters. In this episodic story, the main plotline follows Pávek’s adventures with Otík, who causes more and more trouble and is interested mainly in pigeons and the cinema. An unsuccessful attempt to move the boy to Prague leads to an obvious conclusion: the community loses a great deal without the gawky Otík, so Pávek brings him back. My Sweet Little Village, an angelic celebration of community and everyday human bonds, is the third and penultimate collaboration between Jiří Menzel (director) and Zdeněk Svěrák (screenwriter). The film was made almost by accident, so to speak (more on that before the screening), and turned out to be one of the finest works in Menzel’s oeuvre. Alongside several other awards, it earned the Czechs another Oscar nomination in the Best Foreign Language Film category. After watching the film, it becomes clear why there are places called “Na Sedmém schodu” (On the Seventh Step) in both the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
