Erika Salumäe dreams of becoming the best cyclist in the world. Growing up in Estonia when it was still part of the Soviet Union, she quickly discovers that sport can offer her more than competition: it can also provide an escape from the reality around her. The bicycle becomes a tool through which she can transform her life.
Her extraordinary talent, ambition and determination take Erika all the way to the Olympic podium in Seoul. In 1988, she won a gold medal and became a national hero in Estonia. Behind this spectacular success, however, lies a far more complex story – one of loneliness, a longing for acceptance, the cost of ambition and the search for identity.
Our Erika is a film about a woman who, through sport, fights not only for victory on the track but, above all, for the right to live life on her own terms.
