Five Australians get on their bikes and set out on a 2,600-kilometre journey from Oklahoma to California, following in the footsteps of the Joad family from John Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath. They have 30 days, 420 dollars, a handful of bicycles, some musical instruments and virtually no experience of this kind of expedition.
Along the way, they meet residents of small American towns, listen to their stories and compare Steinbeck’s literary vision with present-day America. Their conversations explore social inequality, migration, immigration policy, money and the myth of the American Dream, asking how much the country has changed since the novel was published.
The Bikes of Wrath is part road movie, part cycling adventure and part humorous portrait of people and their everyday lives. The documentary presents America from the saddle, through the lens of Steinbeck’s novel, chance encounters, hospitality and the stories shared along the way. It is a film about a journey that becomes something far greater than simply covering the distance.
