Góralewicz (K. Majchrzak), młody chłopak z Galicji trafia do cyrku jako początkujący zapaśnik. Charyzmatyczny szef cyrku (W. Pszoniak) organizuje zastawy pod walki atletów. Tam Góralewicz poznaje przyszłych przyjaciół: Bolka (R.Wilhelmi), który zjada koty i Cyklopa (B. Bilewski), pół ślepego z wysiłku. Tam też doświadcza upokorzenia ze strony braci Abs. Od tej chwili będzie ich ścigał z zemsty po całej Europie. W wyniku porachunków między właścicielami cyrków przyjaciele muszą uciekać. Bolcio ginie w walce z bykiem, Cyklop umiera. W Charlottenburgu Góralewicz występuje w sali operowej obok słynnego tenora. Potem trafia do Casino de Paris, gdzie jego niegdyś pierwszy szef jest obecnie kelnerem. Zapaśnik żeni się z dekadentką, wytworną Cecylią (P. Raksa). Nie pali się już do walki, sam ulega dekadencji, ale staje naprzeciw jednego z braci Abs. Zdobywszy wszystko, nie czuje satysfakcji.
Spektakularny debiut Filipa Bajona zachwycał nieposkromioną wyobraźnią, plastycznością wizji i odmiennością od tego, co proponowało polskie kino w okresie moralnego niepokoju. Film przywoływał estetykę malarstwa i grafiki przełomu wieków, a awanturnicza historia z mnóstwem fascynujących bohaterów budziła skojarzenia z filmami Frederica Felliniego i Kena Russella.
Reżyser zdobył Nagrodę za debiut na Festiwalu Polskich Filmów Fabularnych w Gdańsku, a Jerzy Zieliński Nagrodę za zdjęcia (1979). W Koszalinie film zdobył Nagrodę za film fabularny i Nagrodę Dziennikarzy. Krzysztof Majchrzaka uhonorowano Nagrodą im. Zbyszka Cybulskiego (1980). Na Międzynarodowym Festiwali Filmów Autorskich w San Remo reżyser otrzymał Nagrodę za debiut (1980).

A wrestler climbs up the career ladder: from the fair and circus to the ring, even the opera house. He is driven by a desire to take revenge on the brothers who humiliated him at the beginning of his journey. Having won everything, he feels no satisfaction.
Góralewicz (K. Majchrzak), a young boy from Galicia, is a novice wrestler in a circus. The charismatic manager of the circus (W. Pszoniak) accepts bets before the fights of his wrestlers. Góralewicz meets his future friends: Bolek (R. Wilhelmi), who eats cats, and Cyclops (B. Bilewski), half blind due to excessive effort. The wrestler is also humiliated by the Abs brothers. From now on, he would chase them across Europe looking for revenge. As a result of arguments between the owners of circuses, the friends have to flee. Bolcio dies in a bull fight, Cyclops dies too. In Charlottenburg, Góralewicz performs in the opera house next to a famous tenor. Then he goes to the Casino de Paris, where his former boss works as a waiter. The wrestler marries an elegant decadent – Cecylia (P. Raksa). He does not want to fight anymore and becomes decadent too. However, the man confronts one of the Abs brothers. Having won everything, he feels no satisfaction.
Filip Bajon's spectacular debut delighted us with exceptional imagination and delicacy. What is more, it was totally different from the cinema of moral anxiety. The film evoked the aesthetic of painting and graphics from the turn of the century. The rowdy story with many fascinating characters could be associated with films created by Federico Fellini or Ken Russell.
The director won the Debut Award at the Polish Film Festival in Gdańsk, Jerzy Zieliński won the Photography Award (1979). In Koszalin, the film won the Feature Film Award and the Journalists' Award. Krzysztof Majchrzak was given the Zbyszek Cybulski Award (1980). At the San Remo International Film Festival, the director received the Best Debut Award (1980).
