Quo vadis okazało się ostatnim dziełem w dorobku reżysera – a zarazem najdroższą polską produkcją wszech czasów, o budżecie przekraczającym 76 milionów złotych. Akcja filmu toczy się w starożytnym Rzymie za czasów cesarza Nerona. Głównym bohaterem jest Rzymianin, Winicjusz (Paweł Deląg), który zakochuje się w chrześcijance Ligii (Magdalena Mielcarz). Oboje uosabiają ówczesne podziały – na Rzymian i barbarzyńców oraz na chrześcijan i pogan. W tle ich historii miłosnej rozgrywają się dramatyczne wydarzenia: z polecenia cesarza wybucha w Rzymie pożar. Neron obwinia o niego chrześcijan, a wszyscy oskarżeni, włącznie z Ligią, zostają wtrąceni do więzień. W filmie wyróżniają się znakomite dekoracje, kostiumy oraz role drugoplanowe – szczególnie kreacje Jerzego Treli (Chilon) i Bogusława Lindy (Petroniusz).

A record-breaking production. Kawalerowicz wrote his first screenplay adaptation of Henryk Sienkiewicz’s Quo Vadis soon after completing the Oscar-nominated Pharaoh. Yet he had to wait more than thirty years before he was finally able to bring the project to the screen. Quo Vadis became the last film of his career and, at the same time, the most expensive Polish production ever made, with a budget exceeding 76 million złoty. The story unfolds in ancient Rome during the reign of Emperor Nero. Its protagonist, the Roman Marcus Vinicius (Paweł Deląg), falls in love with the Christian Lygia (Magdalena Mielcarz). Together, they embody the divisions of the era: between Romans and barbarians, and between Christians and pagans. Their love story plays out against a backdrop of dramatic events: at Nero’s command, Rome is set ablaze. The Emperor blames the Christians, and all those accused, including Lygia, are thrown into prison. The film stands out for its impressive sets and costumes, as well as its memorable supporting performances, especially those of Jerzy Trela as Chilon and Bogusław Linda as Petronius.
